The Arizona Interscholastic Association made a big and much appreciated announcement regarding the winter sports season.
AIA officials confirmed that girls wrestling would be added to the list of winter sports for the upcoming 2018-19 academic year. The state’s association of high school athletics announced the news on May 21 after the executive board voted to add the growing sport to its offerings.
Many have spoken out in favor of the news, saying this will provide new and improved opportunities for female wrestlers across the state. This upcoming school year, girls wrestling will take place during the winter season and finish with a bracketed individual championship tournament at the same time as boys wrestling state finals. This is usually held at the Prescott Valley Event Center every year, so it’s quite possible girls wrestling would come to the area, too.
There are less than 10 states that currently offer girls wrestling as a championship event. For more information, please visit the official website of theĀ Arizona Interscholastic Association HERE.
