Labor Day weekend is upon us, and officials with the Arizona Department of Transportation are warning drivers of busy roads and the importance of making safe decisions behind the wheel.

Heavy traffic is expected on highways, especially near popular destinations like national parks and recreation areas. Although peak travel times may see congestion, there are no construction-related closures to worry about.

ADOT will lift construction-caused highway closures for the weekend, and work won’t resume until early Tuesday. This will make for easier, less stressful commutes for residents and visitors who are looking to get out and enjoy all the great things our state has to offer on this Labor Day weekend.

Recent holiday weekends from earlier this year saw the implementation of safety measures such as lowered speed limits. This protocol will be in place this weekend as well. Speed limits will be reduced by 10 MPH along Interstate 17 north of Phoenix between New River Road and the Sunset Point Rest Area during peak travel times. Temporary signs will warn drivers of the reduced speed limits, particularly heading northbound on I-17 at the start of the weekend, and along southbound lanes of I-17 on Monday, September 3 when more motorists begin heading south toward the valley.
