A Local Ice-Cream Parlor is Screaming its way into Tucson, One Scoop at a Time

TUCSON, AZ | By: Leslie Jhung |If you haven’t already been to the Screamery, it might be a good idea to put it on your to-do list this summer. The local ice-cream parlor in Tucson handcrafts all of their ice-cream flavors into pure uniqueness. The saying in real estate is location, location, location; Screamery’s would be local, local, local. All of the milk is derived from locally grass-fed cows and pasteurized on site. The owners, Ken and Linda Sarnoski, are conscientious about incorporating only whole food ingredients into their products, which do not contain any preservatives or chemicals.

The moment we walked through the door, the young, upbeat employees, Madison, Tyler and Morgan, instantly greeted us. Not only were they more than eager to share their knowledge of their old-fashioned process of making ice cream, they were attentive and more than happy to offer generous portions of ice-cream samples—what impeccable customer service. I’ll be back for sure to sample more flavors from their life-sized menu blackboard written in a rainbow of colored chalk.

Screamery offers a wide selection of unique flavors, such as Almond Joyous (if you like Almond Joy candy, you’ll love this); Coffee Toffee (self-explanatory); The Munchies (imagine an ice-cream party with pretzels, chips and Ritz crackers inside); Triple Play (chocolate times three, as in chocolate ice-cream, brownies and chocolate chips); Bacon and Bourbon (handmade bacon mixed with almond brittle and bourbon); and Sweet Cream Honey Comb. The latter is undoubtedly their number one seller and includes pieces of handmade honeycomb in sweet cream.

Many of their ice-cream flavors are gluten free and you can find hearty ice-cream creations on the menu, such as Ice-Cream Nachos, Sundaes, Floats and the Farmhouse (a whopping eight scoops of ice-cream with cookie, brownie, buttercake and choice toppings). Whether it’s a kid’s scoop or quart size container of ice cream you are looking for, Screamery’s quality ingredients, wholesomeness and texture make every cent worth it.

Screamery is located in Suite 145 in a small strip mall north of Speedway Blvd. (2545 East Speedway Blvd.). Parking is free and available along the strip-mall area. They are opened daily from 12 p.m. until 10 p.m., and are open until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. There are three locations currently in Tucson, and a fourth location will eventually sprout in the coming year. In the meantime, Phoenix residents will be happy to know that Whole Foods Markets carry select Screamery flavors.
