City of Phoenix Aviation Department Small Business Engagement Manager Valerie Churchwell received the 2017 Calvin C. Goode Lifetime Achievement Award at the Dr. Martin Luther King 2017 Awards Breakfast, held at the Phoenix Convention Center on January 13.

In her role as Manager for Small Business Engagement, Churchwell helps develop processes, programs and policies that support outreach efforts for small, disadvantaged, minority and women-owned subcontractors and businesses involving aviation-related activities.

In addition, Churchwell is the founder of the 5K Torch Run through downtown Phoenix, which includes students from one of Sky Harbor’s neighboring schools, Edison Elementary.  The run, which has been sponsored by Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport for the past 10 years, preceded the opening of the annual breakfast.

Churchwell has been exceptionally dedicated to the community, and has served on several boards including the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Board.  She is also past president, founder and current board member of the Arizona Dream Builder Foundation, which provides scholarships and internships to students who demonstrate a commitment to social justice, leadership and academics.

“We are honored that Valerie has received this award,” stated Jim Bennett, Director of Aviation Services “She exemplifies our mission to improve the quality of life in Phoenix with her values and vision for the airport and our city.”

This award, named for Calvin C. Goode who spent 22 years on the Phoenix City Council, recognizes an exceptional individual who has contributed to make Phoenix a better place to live by promoting social and economic justice.

Additionally, Phoenix Aviation Advisory Board Member Alan “AP” Powell is the recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Living the Dream Award.  Powell is recognized for his personal commitment to social justice and human relations through the vital work he does for the community.  Powell is a Gulf War Veteran, entrepreneur, and strategic consultant developing strategic relationships for Fortune 500 companies.  His community involvement includes serving on the 8th District African-American Advisory Council and on the Phoenix Military Veteran’s Commission, and he is the founder of the Checkered Flag Run Foundation, which strives to give diverse and quality educational programs to under-served students.

“I would like to congratulate Mr. Powell and thank him for his service on the Phoenix Aviation Advisory Board, taking time out of his already-busy schedule to provide valuable insight and guidance” said Bennett.

The event is sponsored by the Arizona Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee and supported by the Phoenix Human Relations Commission.
