In addition, Churchwell is the founder of the 5K Torch Run through downtown Phoenix, which includes students from one of Sky Harbor’s neighboring schools, Edison Elementary. The run, which has been sponsored by Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport for the past 10 years, preceded the opening of the annual breakfast.

She is also past president, founder and current board member of the Arizona Dream Builder Foundation, which provides scholarships and internships to students who demonstrate a commitment to social justice, leadership and academics.
“We are honored that Valerie has received this award,” stated Jim Bennett, Director of Aviation Services “She exemplifies our mission to improve the quality of life in Phoenix with her values and vision for the airport and our city.”
This award, named for Calvin C. Goode who spent 22 years on the Phoenix City Council, recognizes an exceptional individual who has contributed to make Phoenix a better place to live by promoting social and economic justice.
