2nd Annual Prickly Pedal Race Takes Riders Along Maricopa Trail

More than 300 mountain bikers from all around the nation took the Maricopa Trail by storm last weekend in the second annual Prickly Pedal Mountain Bike Race.  The event started at Cave Creek and challenged riders to keep up the pace for around 40 miles ending at Lake Pleasant Regional Park.  Additionally, kids were invited to race for free at Lake Pleasant Regional Park in a course designed by the Desert Foothills Mountain Bike Association.

“One of the great things about this race is it’s a family event, and everyone who participated is supporting the Maricopa Trail,” said Supervisor Bill Gates, District 3.

The trail connects all 10 county parks. Race entry fees benefitted the Maricopa Trail and Park Foundation which works to help maintain the trail system and provide sustainable financial support for the Regional Parks.  The county parks are almost completely self-funded through entry fees and contributions.

“I have to give credit to my predecessor Andy Kunasek and the board members who really made this a goal to link those trails,” said Supervisor Gates. “We have so many people who love to ride mountain bikes and hike, and this is a great way to connect those amenities.”

Racers, volunteers and members of the community came together at the finish of the event to celebrate at Lake Pleasant Regional Park on Saturday afternoon.  Hundreds of people showed up to enjoy live music, refreshments and great prizes.
