Last Thursday, ONE Community brought together faith and transgender leaders from across the state for our first ever “Faith and Transgender Day” at the state Capitol. Our leaders spoke side-by-side and shared their experiences about the importance of equal treatment for all Arizonans with elected officials from both sides of the political aisle.
Our goal in bringing these two groups together was to demonstrate that being a person of faith and being LGBTQ are not mutually exclusive. That while some may use religion as a road block to equality, the over 200 clergy who have signed the UNITY Pledge and are Open for Worship to everyone, represent thousands of congregants across the state, support and understand the need for equal treatment. That while we may have differences, we can agree that every person should be able to earn a living without fear of being fired, denied housing, or refused service simply because of who they are or who they love. We can agree that businesses are not houses of worship where religious beliefs can be used as an excuse to exclude people. And most importantly, treating others as we want to be treated is not only Biblical, but an essential element in our civil society of equal protections.
If you haven’t already, please sign the UNITY Pledge in support of equal treatment for all Arizonans. If you already have, please consider a donation of any size to support our work to create an Arizona that celebrates, respects and protects all people through innovative programming like Faith and Transgender Day!
